In short
Most PM5 faults come down to power or a loose cable. Replace the two D-cell batteries, check the cables at the back of the monitor and down the monitor arm are fully seated, then restart. If the screen works but metres do not count, look at the sensor cable near the flywheel. Persistent faults often clear with a firmware update through Concept2 Utility.

The PM5 is the monitor used on Concept2's RowErg, BikeErg and SkiErg. It runs on two D-cell batteries, and the flywheel's generator helps power it while you row. When it goes blank, freezes or stops counting metres, the cause is usually power, a loose cable or out-of-date firmware rather than a broken monitor. This guide works through the checks in order. Concept2 publishes detailed troubleshooting on its support pages and in the manual, and offers phone and email support, so use those for anything beyond these basic steps.
Blank screen: start with the batteries
The PM5 uses two D-cell batteries in a compartment on the back. Even though rowing generates some power, the monitor needs working batteries to start, keep its clock and store workouts. If the screen stays blank, fit two fresh D-cells, making sure they face the right way.
After changing the batteries, press a button or pull the handle to wake the monitor. If it still does not respond, remove the batteries for a minute and refit them to force a full restart.
| Symptom | Likely cause | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Completely blank | Flat batteries or loose cable | New D-cells, reseat cables |
| Turns on but metres do not count | Sensor (pickup) cable loose | Check cable near flywheel |
| Freezes or resets mid-row | Weak batteries or firmware | New batteries, update firmware |
| Will not connect to ErgData | Bluetooth pairing or firmware | Forget and re-pair, update firmware |
- 1
Open the battery compartment on the back of the PM5.
- 2
Fit two new D-cell batteries the right way round.
- 3
Press a button or pull the handle to wake it.
- 4
If still blank, remove the batteries for a minute and refit.
- 5
Check the cables if nothing changes.
Check the cables
Two cables matter. One runs from the back of the monitor down the monitor arm; the other connects near the flywheel and carries the signal that counts each flywheel turn. On many RowErgs these meet at a connector near the base of the monitor arm. Unplug each one, check for bent pins or damage, and push it back firmly.
If the monitor turns on but distance and pace stay at zero, the sensor cable is the most likely cause. The connector is near the flywheel housing; Concept2's support pages show where it sits on each model. Do not pull on the cable itself, only on the plug.
Note:Keep fingers away from the flywheel and chain while checking cables, and do not row while the chain or handle could catch a loose cable. Do not open the monitor case. If a cable is damaged, order a replacement from Concept2 rather than repairing it.
Update the firmware with Concept2 Utility
Concept2 releases firmware updates for the PM5 that fix bugs and improve connections. To update, install Concept2 Utility on a Windows or Mac computer, connect the PM5 with a USB cable and follow the on-screen steps. The process takes a few minutes; do not unplug the cable while it runs.
Some newer PM5 versions can also update through the ErgData app. Check Concept2's support pages for which method suits your monitor. A firmware update is a good step if the monitor freezes, resets mid-row or will not pair with apps.
Bluetooth and app pairing problems
If ErgData or another app cannot find the PM5, close the app, wake the monitor, and open the app again. Make sure the PM5 is not already connected to another phone or a heart rate strap in a way that blocks a new link. Removing old pairings in the app and on your phone often clears the problem.
Our Concept2 Logbook guide explains how ErgData, the PM5 and the online Logbook fit together. If your problem is the damper or drag factor rather than the monitor, see damper settings explained.
Parts, support and other monitors
If none of the checks work, contact Concept2 UK through its website. It sells spare cables, monitor arms and replacement monitors, and its support team can usually tell from your description which part has failed. Have your machine's serial number ready; it is usually on a label on the front leg or under the monitor arm.
If you are comparing other connected rowers, our smart rowing machines guide lists which models send data to apps, and our best rowing machines guide compares monitors across air, magnetic and water rowers.
Frequently asked questions
What batteries does the Concept2 PM5 take? Two D-cell batteries, fitted in the compartment on the back of the monitor.
Why does my PM5 turn on but not count metres? The most common cause is the sensor cable near the flywheel being loose or damaged. Reseat it, then check it for wear.
How do I update PM5 firmware? Use Concept2 Utility on a computer with a USB cable, or ErgData on some newer models, following Concept2's instructions.
Can I buy Concept2 parts in the UK? Yes, Concept2 UK sells cables, monitors and other parts through its website.
