Not everyone wants an exercise bike that asks for a phone, an account and a firmware update. The Marcy NS-1201U is a deliberately simple upright: a steel frame, eight magnetic resistance levels, a seat you can raise or lower with a knob and a small screen. It suits someone who wants to pedal while watching television and track distance and time, nothing more.

Our take
Build and construction
Marcy describes the frame as steel tubing with moulded ABS covers and a powder-coated finish. The bike weighs 19.4 kg and measures 83.8 cm deep, 50.8 cm wide and 132.1 cm tall, so it fits in the corner of a bedroom or home office. The listed maximum user weight is 300 lb, which works out at about 136 kg.
The handles are contoured and wrapped in high-density foam, a detail that helps on longer, slower sessions where you rest weight on the bars.
Resistance and the console
Resistance is magnetic, set by hand across eight preset levels that Marcy likens to riding different terrain. A belt drive links the pedals to the flywheel. Flywheel weight is not listed.
The LCD shows distance, current speed, time elapsed and calories burned. There is no mention of pulse sensors, Bluetooth or app support, and the display is battery powered according to the spec table.
Adjustment and fit
Seat height changes through a quick-release knob, handy when two people share the bike. Only height is listed: there is no fore-aft slide or handlebar adjustment mentioned. The height figures in the spec table are contradictory (a minimum above the maximum), so taller or shorter riders should not rely on them and may want to confirm with Marcy.
Marcy versus the Sunny upright and YPOO BC710
Sunny's Performance Interactive upright also has eight levels but adds a four-way seat, pulse sensors and the SunnyFit app, so it is the better choice for a family with mixed heights. The YPOO BC710 spin bike brings Zwift and Kinomap compatibility and stepless resistance. Against both, the Marcy wins only on simplicity and a smaller footprint, but for some buyers that is exactly the point.
Verdict
Buy the Marcy if you want a compact, no-fuss upright to pedal in front of the TV and have no interest in apps. If more than one person will ride it, the Sunny upright's extra seat adjustment is worth having, and riders who want virtual routes should look at the YPOO BC710.
