**In short:** Most console faults come down to power, a loose sensor cable or a misaligned speed sensor. Fit fresh batteries or check the adaptor, reseat the cable at the console and down the stem, check the magnet and sensor near the crank or flywheel, then reset the console. If the screen works but an app does not, the issue is Bluetooth pairing.

A blank screen, a console that resets or a display that shows time but no speed are common exercise bike faults. They are usually simple to fix, and most do not need a new console. This guide works through the likely causes in order, from power to cables, sensors and pairing, for upright bikes, spin bikes and recumbents. Brand layouts differ, so use your manual alongside these steps, and contact the seller or maker if the bike is still under warranty.

## Check the power first

Many consoles run on AA or AAA batteries, usually in a compartment on the back. Weak batteries cause dim screens, flickering and random resets. Fit a full set of fresh batteries, all of the same type, and check that the contacts are clean and not corroded.

Consoles with a mains adaptor need the adaptor plugged into the bike and the wall, with the socket switched on. Try another socket. Check the adaptor's plug at the bike, which can work loose. Self-powered bikes need you to pedal for a few seconds before the screen wakes.

## Reseat the console cable

A cable runs from the console down the handlebar stem to a sensor near the flywheel or crank. It often has a connector at the back of the console and another where the stem meets the frame. Unplug and firmly reconnect both.

During assembly, it is easy to trap this cable when fitting the stem, which can cut or pinch it. Look along its length for damage. A pinched cable often causes a console that works when you move the handlebars and fails when you ride.

1. Remove the batteries or unplug the adaptor.
2. Unplug the cable at the back of the console and plug it back in firmly.
3. Find the joint where the stem meets the frame and reconnect the cable there.
4. Check for pinches or cuts along the cable.
5. Refit power and test.

## Check the speed sensor and magnet

Speed, distance and cadence come from a small sensor that detects a magnet passing it on each turn of the crank or flywheel. If the sensor has moved, or the magnet has fallen off, the console shows time but no speed.

With the bike unplugged, remove the side cover as the manual describes and look for the sensor and magnet. They should line up closely as the crank turns. Gently move the sensor back into position if it has been knocked. If the magnet is missing, check inside the cover; it may be lying loose.

Note: Let the flywheel stop and unplug any powered console before removing covers. Keep fingers clear of the belt and flywheel.

## Reset the console

Many consoles have a reset button or reset when you remove the batteries for a minute. A reset clears stuck readings and error codes. Check the manual for your model's method, as some use a long press on a combination of buttons.

If your console shows an error code, the manual usually explains it. Codes often point to a sensor or motor problem on bikes with powered resistance.

## When the console works but the app does not

If the console is fine but an app will not connect, the problem is pairing. Close the app, turn Bluetooth off and on, and try again. Make sure no other phone or tablet is already connected, because many bikes accept only one connection at a time.

Some bikes connect only to the maker's own app, while others broadcast standard Bluetooth fitness data for Zwift and similar apps. Check the listing. ## Replacing a console

If the console is dead after fresh power, a new cable check and a reset, a replacement may be needed. Contact the maker or seller with the model number from the frame label; generic consoles rarely match the sensor and plug.

Under warranty, do not open the console itself. If you are thinking of replacing the bike, compare models in our [best exercise bikes](https://rowandspin.co.uk/best/best-exercise-bike-uk) and [best spin bikes](https://rowandspin.co.uk/best/best-spin-bike-uk) guides.

## Frequently asked questions

**Why does my exercise bike show time but no speed?** The speed sensor is not detecting the magnet. Check the sensor cable and the alignment of the sensor and magnet.

**Why does my console keep resetting?** Weak batteries are the usual cause. Fit a fresh set of the same type and check the contacts.

**Can I use a different console on my bike?** Generic consoles rarely fit. Ask the maker for the correct replacement for your model.

**Why will my bike not connect to my phone?** Another device may already be connected, or the bike may only work with the maker's app. Check the listing and close other apps.
